When Should You Replace Your Windshield Wipers?

Wiper blades wear out over time due to sun, heat, and heavy use. Most wipers last about 6 to 12 months, depending on the weather and how often you use them. If you’re asking how long windshield wipers last, check for these signs:

  • Wiper blades streaking or smearing water
  • Squeaking or skipping as they move across the glass
  • Visible cracks or fraying on the rubber blades
  • Reduced visibility during storms

If you notice any of these issues, it’s time for a new set of blades.

How to Remove Old Wiper Blades

Swapping out old wipers is easier than you might think. Just follow these simple steps:

  1. Lift the wiper arm away from the windshield. It should stay upright on its own.
  2. Find the release tab or button on the blade attachment.
  3. Press the tab and slide the blade downward to unhook it.
  4. Gently remove the blade, being careful not to let the metal arm snap back against the glass.

How to Install New Wiper Blades

Once you’ve removed the old ones, installing new blades is just as simple:

  1. Check the size of the wiper blades you need (you’ll find this in your owner’s manual or by asking your local dealership).
  2. Slide the new blade onto the hook until you hear a click or feel it lock in place.
  3. Lower the arm carefully back onto the windshield.
  4. Repeat the process for the other wiper.

Give them a test swipe with washer fluid to make sure they’re working correctly!
